The first all-black football team to win a Georgia High School Association State Championship since the Atlanta schools were integrated in 1966 has received some long-overdue recognition.The 1973 “Wolves” of Southwest Atlanta High School have been awarded Atlanta Public Schools’ first Throwback Award. Anthony Flanagan, an All-American quarterback at Southwest High School in Atlanta, was the first African-American quarterback at the University of Georgia.

Kirby McDaniel, pictured here in 1980 in his role as Southwest High School's football coach, was head football coach for Southwest High School from 1979 to 1980, and its successor, Benjamin E.
