A house on Hiram Davis Road in Lawrenceville was destroyed by a fire Wednesday afternoon.

Gwinnett County fire crews responded a little after 5 p.m. to a passerby’s 911 report of a fire in the 1100 block of Hiram Davis Road SE. The passerby and a neighbor knocked on the door to alert the house’s occupants, but no one was home, according to a news release from the fire department.

Officials could see “a heavy column of black smoke” as they approached the house. Once on the scene, found they the home and an SUV in the driveway on fire.

Fire crews battled the blaze using aerial ladders as it damaged the siding on an adjacent house and spread to surrounding woods before it was put out.

The house and the SUV were destroyed. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, authorities said.
