At least a dozen people are homeless Monday after a fire destroyed an apartment building in Forest Park, officials said.

The fire broke out at the apartment complex on Waldrop Drive around 2 a.m., said Forest Park Fire Chief Eddie Buckholts.

Four of the eight apartments were engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Officials believe the fire likely broke out in the bottom floor and quickly progressed to the attic. Because the building was built in the 1960s, no firewalls were in place to contain the blaze, he said.

The other four apartments are uninhabitable due to water and smoke damage, he said.

No one was seriously injured in the blaze, but one person was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation, Buckholts said.

Officials believe an unattended candle was the cause of the fire, but they continue to investigate, Buckholts said.

The American Red Cross was on the scene to assist the 12 displaced residents.
