A predawn fire Thursday caused minor damage to the clubhouse at the Centennial Place apartments in downtown Atlanta.

Atlanta fire Battalion Chief David Rhodes said fire crews responding to an alarm bell just before 5 a.m. noticed light smoke and water flowing from the Merritts Avenue building, which houses a workout room, locker rooms and a reception area.

Rhodes told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the fire was contained to the ceiling area between the first and second floors.

The flames had been partially doused by a burned PVC water pipe when firefighters arrived, Rhodes said.

There was no one inside the building when the fire broke out, and no injuries were reported.

The apartment complex spans several blocks along Centennial Olympic Park Drive, just south of the Georgia Tech campus.
