On May 20, police in Alpharetta arrested a man who was wanted on charges of aggravated assault and burglary in two Illinois counties.
Todd McGee, 34, was identified by police by the use of a special fingerprint scanner that allowed police to access a national database. When police found him around 9 p.m. behind a Ross Dress for Less store along North Point Parkway, he initially gave them a fake name.
“It just accesses a national database of fingerprints, so if you are unable to identify somebody with the name and date of birth that they provide you with, if that’s a tool at your disposal, you bring them out, fingerprint them and get a positive return,” Jeffery Ross of the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety told Channel 2 Action News.

McGee is also wanted on domestic violence and home invasion charges.
“He’s got three warrants, dude,” an officer says on dash-cam footage of the arrest obtained by Channel 2. “Right now, I’m going to arrest you. We know who you are.”
According to a police report, an officer approached McGee because the store was closed and he “appeared suspicious.” The police report noted that Alpharetta has had a few cases of cars being broken into recently.
The police report says that McGee began to sweat and breathe heavily when he was questioned by police. He told police he was walking to his girlfriend’s apartment and that he didn’t want to walk on the sidewalk because he was “embarrassed” by the way he was dressed.
McGee continued to refuse to identify himself after police could not identify him by the name he gave them, “Joseph McGee.” That’s when the officer called for backup and the fingerprint scanner.
The scanner showed warrants for McGee’s arrest in Macon and Piatt counties in Illinois.
According to the police report, McGee told police, “I’m relieved that you caught me. I have a son back home.”
McGee remains in a Fulton County jail after he waived extradition.
