School buses in Fayette County will be extra cool next year. The Board of Education voted 5-0 Monday to allocate $1.2 million of SPLOST funds to retrofit its buses with air conditioning, which works out to about $6,418 per bus.

The work, which will start in a few months and not cause any disruption in service, should be completed by May. Superintendent Joseph Barrow Jr. said the cooler buses should help the system’s ongoing efforts to recruit and retain drivers.

The county also approved another $118,750 to have all of the buses commercially cleaned.
