Fayette County has amended its animal shelter policy so that all cats and dogs will be spayed or neutered before they are adopted. The Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 on Oct. 26 to make the change, to help reduce pet overpopulation.

Adoption fees for animals already neutered will remain at $30 for dogs and $20 for cats. If the animal is not yet neutered, an additional spay/neuter fee will be $120 for dogs and $60 for cats, which is significantly lower than the surgical fees at private veterinary hospitals.

All animals adopted from the shelter will be subject to a $10 rabies vaccination fee, and microchips are included in the adoption fee.
