Fayette County is offering new incentives to try to fill more school bus driver jobs.

The county wants to hire 20-25 more substitute drivers, who can then progress to full-time positions with benefits if they choose, said Roxane Owen, director of transportation for the school system.

The Board of Education discussed the driver shortage on March 7, and is offering $100 to current employees who recruit drivers, in addition to providing at least $150 for driver training. The starting salary for substitutes is $14.20 per hour; full-time drivers begin at $12,100 per year.

Owen said the county wants to fill its positions by August.
