Fayette County’s Board of Commissioners will discuss on Thursday the possibility of funding a new animal shelter.

The current facility on Ga. Hwy. 74 South, on the border with Peachtree City, was built in 1983 and renovated in 2001; it has 26 dog kennels for intake and quarantine, and space for about 40 cats, but not does accept owner-surrendered animals.

Shelter Director Jerry Collins is asking the county for a $1 million capital project for the design and construction of a larger, more modern facility that would provide “significant operational enhancements” for cleaning and disease management but not require any more staff. Collins wants room for 42 dog kennels and new office space, with the existing building being converted for cat intake and adoptions as well as supply storage.

The commission will meet at 7 p.m. at the administrative complex, 140 Stonewall Ave. West in Fayetteville.
