Fayette County residents might someday be able to use solar-powered transport pods running on elevated tracks to glide around the county and beyond. Such was the pitch presented by a representative from Transit X, LLC to a special joint meeting of the Board of Commissioners and the Transportation Committee on Oct. 2.

The information session outlined a preliminary proposal to build a $263 million privately funded 43-mile network along major roads that would carry up to five people per pod at 45 mph to any of 140 stops, 24 hours a day. The system, which is about to be adopted in Henry County, could potentially link to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and beyond. However, Transportation Committee Chairman Randy Ognio said the county needs more information to determine the system’s viability.
