More than two dozen families were displaced by a Saturday evening fire at a Sandy Springs apartment complex.

Authorities said the fire broke out at the Dunwoody Station Apartments near Peachtree Dunwoody Road at about 8:20 p.m. The blaze brought under control in about an hour, Sandy Springs fire department Deputy Chief Mark Duke said, but crews remained on scene for several hours to extinguish hot spots.

Duke said the complex’s 100 building had 28 apartments and most sustained “some type of fire, smoke or water damage.”

Red Cross spokeswoman Sherry Nicholson said 27 families — a total of 65 people — asked the organization for help and received “emergency lodging, food, clothing, emotional support, toiletries, replacement medications and other essentials.”

“Red Cross caseworkers will continue to work one-on-one with the families next week to help them get back on their feet,” Nicholson said.

No injuries were reported.

Duke said early indications suggest the blaze started “on or around” an upper floor balcony before spreading to the attic and roof.

“As of this morning,” he said, “we have not determined a cause.
