Twelve families lost their homes Wednesday morning in a major fire at a DeKalb County apartment complex.

The fire broke out just after 3 a.m. in an upper-floor unit at the Kensington Station Apartments, located at 3620 Clubhouse Circle. Firefighters contained the blaze to one building.

But 12 of the building's 24 units were destroyed or damaged, prompting the evacuation of 24 adults and 26 children. DeKalb County Fire Capt. Eric Jackson said it was very fortunate no one was hurt. It took firefighters 90 minutes to put out the fire.

"We were able to save the additional 12 units from being involved in the fire," Jackson said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
