The Faculty Council at Emory University this week stated their “firm support” for President James Wagner’s continued leadership.
The council is made up of faculty representing all the university’s colleges and programs. Their statement of support came days after faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences rejected a vote of no confidence in Wagner.
Wagner has had a rocky relationship with faculty this academic year. Frustrations began in the fall when administrators announced program cuts in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The situation worsened in February after Wagner drew national criticism for a column he wrote that used the notorious three-fifths compromise as an example of how people with opposing viewpoints can work together. The compromise was an agreement between Southern and Northern states to count slaves as three-fifths of a person for representation in Congress.
Wagner has repeatedly apologized for the essay and has held met with faculty and others to discuss it.
