East Point on Thursday afternoon lifted its advisory to residents to boil their tap water after a water main broke along Headland Drive west of Ben Hill Road.

The city announced in a news release that the water was safe to drink straight from the tap at 2:30 p.m., having "passed the mandatory quality testing which require 24 hours based on our safety standards."

The break was reported at 4 p.m. Monday, and crews of the East Point Water and Sewer Department were sent to the scene to fix it.

Roy Barnes, the city's water and sewer director, said a 2-foot-long crack had developed in the bottom of a 12-inch water main. He said the break might have been due to age, as the cast-iron pipe probably was close to 50 years old.

The boil advisory was issued about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Barnes said at the time that the state Environmental Protection Division would require water samplings and bacteria tests before the advisory could be lifted.
