A 19-year-old woman died at a local hospital after being pulled from a burning Cobb County home early Sunday morning, officials said.

Kedi Michelle was one of two women inside the home in the 1800 block of Gherry Drive near Austell when fire broke out about 1 a.m., fire officials said. Fire crews were called in when several neighbors saw the flames.

One neighbor, Harry Jones, told Channel 2 Action News that Michelle’s mother was able to make it out. However, he said he heard her calling for someone to help her daughter.

“She was probably trying to get back in and get her daughter, but she just kept hollering, ‘Help,’” he said.

Crews arrived within five minutes of the first call, but Cobb fire spokesman James Kapish said the fire at the single-story house was already fully involved. They met with the 19-year-old’s mother, who had burns to both her arms, in the backyard, Channel 2 reported.

Firefighters then went inside for Michelle and pulled her out from a bedroom, Kapish said.

“The on-scene crews were very courageous, risking their lives attempting to save the patients,” he said in a statement to the news station.

Both were taken to WellStar Cobb Hospital, where Michelle died of her injuries. The condition of the other victim was not known Wednesday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
