Duluth police identify suspect in theft of dead man’s Porsche

Police say there is no evidence Robert Craig Sandman knew a Duluth man found dead inside his home last Thursday.

But Sandman, wanted for allegedly stealing the victim’s 1988 red Porsche 944, was well-acquainted with Don Singer’s neighborhood, according to investigators.

In March 2012, Sandman, 52, was charged with two counts of theft and aggravated stalking for an incident that occurred not far from Singer’s home on Montheath Pass, said Duluth police Capt. Mark Hunter. He was convicted and sent to the Georgia state prison in Jackson in February and released March 22.

Singer, 57, was last seen alive March 23. His daughter discovered him wrapped in blankets inside his garage last Thursday.

Hunter said Sandman is not wanted for the slaying but added, “we definitely want to talk to him.” Additional charges may be pending, he said, as well as other suspects.

“There are additional people associated with elements of the case that may face charges,” Hunter said. “The investigation is ongoing in that regard.”

Meanwhile, locating the missing Porsche, with Georgia tag ADK 6725, has proven more difficult than initially assumed.

“I thought we’d have no trouble finding it,” Hunter said, “but even in our own little city, we have found many Porsches matching that description.”

Police have not yet determined how Singer died. Hunter said they are awaiting toxicology results along with additional forensic testing before determining a cause of death.
