On May 12, more than 20,000 rubber ducks raced to a finish at the 11th Annual Duck Derby: Peace, Love, and Ducks event which raised money and awareness for Advocates for Children.

The family event relied on the community to purchase rubber ducks, either single or "quack packs",  that would be released on the Etowah River for a race that awarded the winner with a brand new car.

“The derby and the whole event is a fun way for the community to get involved in to raise funds and awareness for our organization,” said event co-chair Tina Jennings. “By being a family-friendly event, it added to the message of taking care of the children in our communities.”

The organization aims to prevent and help those who are victims of child abuse in Bartow County and surrounding areas in Northwest Georgia. The annual event included a rock concert, Duck Dash 5K, and the derby that raised almost $80,000.

The money raised will go toward programs and the shelter that helps 2,600 children annually. Advocates for Children receives the assistance of more than 1,000 volunteers each year to make the organization successful for the children.

From program facilitators, event organizers, or someone giving time to prepare meals at the children’s shelter, there are plenty of ways to volunteer with Advocates for Children.

“Our volunteers and community are very important in making this organization run,” said Executive Director Patty Eagar. “Every effort helps in our mission to protect our children.”
