Drivers in Gwinnett County are frustrated over delays on a unique interchange designed to cut part of the morning commute in half.

Orange cones and construction debris are becoming a common sight along Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

The project at the interchange is well behind schedule, thanks to both construction and weather delays. To work on the road, crews had to shut down one lane in each direction. That forces drivers sit through light after light.

Channel 2 Action News spoke with a driver who purposely leaves 30 minutes early just to avoid the massive traffic jams.

Officials say removing just one lane seriously impacts the traffic.

"You have a corridor that's carrying 60,000 to 70,000 cars a day, you remove one lane of the construction, it's tough," said Chuck Warbington, Gwinnett Village CID.

Project officials said road construction should be complete within a few weeks, including work on the sidewalk down the middle of the Interstate 85 bridge.
