Letter carriers throughout metro Atlanta will spend the day collecting non-perishable food items from customers during their route and delivering them to the Atlanta Community Food Bank, according to a press release. The donated grocery products will be delivered to the Food Bank where current and retired letter carriers will unload and sort through the items. The Food Bank will then distribute the items to some of its 600 nonprofit partner agencies to help families, children and seniors in need this summer.

The U.S. Postal Service & National Association of Letter Carriers is asking residents to place the food items near their mailbox on Saturday, May 12.

Stamp Out Hunger is the largest, single-day food drive in the country. In the quarter-century since it began, the annual food drive has collected almost 1.6 billion pounds of food. Community members can take part by leaving non-perishable food donations (no glass containers) in a bag near their mailbox. Those items will then be donated to the Food Bank and other local nonprofits for distribution, where the need is high as school prepares to let out for the summer. According to a study by Feeding America, 1 in 5 Georgia children face hunger each day.
