Kennedy Watson, 15, wanted to give wanted to give deserving girls at Shiloh High School in Snellville a day filled with pampering before the school’s homecoming dance on Saturday. Although she’s a junior at Woodward Academy, she used to attend the Shiloh schools.

For Watson, the girls had to have a 3.2 GPA or above and be involved in their communities, she said. Sophomore Angel-Brittany Coulibaly, junior Biajani “Bebe” McEwen-Lopez, and senior Cinithia Flores, were the recipients of the inaugural A Diva in The Making event.

All three girls have achieved success in academics, sports, and volunteerism — the same achievements that got them recommended by teachers at Shiloh High for the makeovers.

The girls were pampered from head-to-toe with manicures and pedicures from Fine Nails, full makeup by Makeup by Muse, and hair styling by celebrity hair stylist Derek J of The J Spot Salon in Buckhead.

When he was approached to be a part of A Diva in The Making, Derek J said he could not refuse.

“It is wonderful to see someone as young as Kennedy giving back to her community and her peers,” said Derek J, who also stars on Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta and Fashion Queens. “We always encourage young girls to know that they are beautiful on the inside, but it’s great to have some fun and let them match that beauty on the outside, too.”

Along with the pampering services, Watson hopes to share a bigger message with A Diva in The Making.

“It’s cool to be smart,” shared Watson, who herself is an honor student and hopes to pursue a career in medicine. “These girls have set high goals for themselves, so it’s awesome for them to get pampered and dolled up for a fun night at a school dance.”

She hopes to turn the community service project into a nonprofit organization so she can expand A Diva in The Making to serve more girls in the community.

McEwen-Lopez felt “proud of the impression and impact I have made on my teachers and peers to be nominated to receive this makeover,” she said. “This inspires me to give back to my community to make difference where I can.”
