Avondale Estates officials recently met with staff from Euramex Management, which owns 13 acres downtown, and came away encouraged with the developer’s “schematic design,” according to Mayor Jonathan Elmore. Euramex is planning a massive mixed-use project with early cost estimates at $50 million to $80 million.

“This project has a huge scope,” Elmore said. “They are building from scratch. There is no water, no power, not even any streets. I would say this is the second most ambitious project in city history. The first was the genesis of the city.”

Although it could be a year before “we put the golden shovel in the dirt,” Elmore said he doesn’t believe the developer is procrastinating on the project.

“Believe me,” he said, “they’re anxious to get going — they own the land and they’re making payments. In the end, what they’re proposing will push Avondale forward in a viable way. They will bring in retail to the central business district, and offer a broader mix of housing.”
