Seventeen new detention officers are now helping secure the DeKalb County jail.

DeKalb Sheriff Thomas Brown swore the recruits in on Friday after they graduated from the 111th basic jailers’ academy.

During the five-week training, the officers learned defensive tactics, basic fire safety, fingerprint classification and inmate manipulation, the sheriff said.

The DeKalb jail houses about 3,400 inmates.
