Senior student athletes from DeKalb County Schools picked up 173 scholarships for college in 10 sports, totaling an estimated $6.37 million this past school year, the district announced.

The scholarships are for 103 colleges from 27 states. DeKalb had 72 football players sign early and with 18 coming since the February National Signing Day. Seventeen scholarships were accounted for by Tucker High, while 10 went to Stephenson and eight each to Columbia, Lithonia, Miller Grove and Southwest DeKalb high schools.

Basketball was the next highest with 27 players (15 girls, 12 boys) getting nearly $1 million. Schools included were Miller Grove, Cedar Grove, Columbia and Tucker.

In track, 12 girls and eight boys reached just over $525,000. Arabia Mountain led the way with four track scholarships, followed by Cedar Grove and Druid Hills with three each.

Redan led the way in baseball scholarships, with nine of the county’s 16 signees.
