A DeKalb police officer who suffered a fractured skull and brain injury after being hit by a motorist on I-20 was discharged Tuesday from the Shepherd Center.

In addition to sustaining the head injury, Officer Daniel LaCoste’s collarbone and leg were broken after a passing motorist hit him July 17 as he responded to another traffic accident.

Channel 2 Action News reported that family members took LaCoste home. They said incidents like this can be avoided if motorists approaching accident scenes would be more cautious.

“Give them a lane,” brother Jason LaCoste told Channel 2. “Give them a lane. Protect them. They protect us.”

Daniel LaCoste, a 19-year veteran DeKalb police veteran, had been at Grady Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Shepherd Center, which specializes in rehabilitation for people with spinal cord or brain injuries.

Kimyata White, the driver who struck the officer, was charged with improper lane change and driving too fast for conditions.
