DeKalb County is hosting a free carnival on Buford Highway this weekend to promote participation in the upcoming census.

The family-friendly event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, featuring bouncy castles as well as free food and games for attendees. The carnival will take place at Northeast Plaza, located at 3307 Buford Highway in Brookhaven.

The Latino Community Fund, Center for Pan Asian Community Services (CPACS) and New American Pathways are helping to put on the educational event, which is focused on spreading awareness about the census.

For months, DeKalb has been working to get the word out about the importance of participating in the census, the decennial count of people living in the United States. Officials expressed interest in working with various community organizations within DeKalb’s diverse population to ensure a complete count on the census.

The official count starts next month, when households will begin getting letters in the mail inviting them to take the census survey online, which is an option for the first time in 2020. Residents can also respond through a paper survey.
