The start of demolition for two buildings at Brannon Hill Condominium, 1000 Old Hampton Drive, Clarkston, will take place after CEO Michael Thurmond and the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners host a news conference 10 a.m. July 13. This phase of demolition will address 28 of the approximately 108 vacated units in various states of disrepair. Already, approximately 122 units at the complex have been demolished and 186 are still inhabited.
Located near Memorial Drive and the city of Clarkston, a judge’s decision in November gave the county permission to intervene in a community that has earned a reputation for intractable blight and poverty.
The complex has been deteriorating for more than a decade as fires have ravaged several buildings that were left in disrepair. Those buildings became a haven for crime and homelessness, while residents were left with little recourse because of absent owners.
