Five years later, Doraville Police Detective Robert Shane Wilson, who was killed by a drunk driver, is being memorialized with a new honor.

On Monday, Mayor Donna Pittman unveiled a plaque which will be placed on the I-20 bridge near the site of the Nov. 14, 2011, crash. Wilson was on call as part of the Doraville SWAT team and was headed to a home invasion when he was struck head on.

The bridge will be named the “Robert Shane Wilson Memorial Bridge.”

“We are so grateful to be able to honor Shane with this plaque that will be placed near the spot marking the end of his ‘last watch,’ ” the mayor said in a ceremony at City Hall, according to a news release. “With the dedication of this bridge, we can keep his memory alive for decades to come.”
