DeKalb apartments burn

Fire heavily damaged an apartment building in south DeKalb County.

Some 45 DeKalb County firefighters battled a 2-alarm fire Thursday morning at an apartment complex on Candler Road in south DeKalb.

The two-alarm fire broke out 4:35 a.m. at the Park on Candler complex just north of I-20. Fire was reported through the roof by arriving companies.

Samantha Evei holds her 6-year-old nephew, Nathanial Baptiste, after they were forced to evacuate the burning apartments. "Our fire alarm didn't even go off, she said. We grabbed my nephew and just ran out." Officials reported no injuries.

Fire apparatus stretched the entire length of the drive into the complex. Candler Road was shut initially as crews stretched hoses across the road, but was soon reopened.

Firefighters kept a steady supply of air bottles coming in for the interior attack.

The 16-unit building had eight units destroyed in the fire and much of the rest of the building sustained smoke and water damage.
