Decatur will name about 20 members to its comprehensive plan steering during the city commission meeting 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the City Commission Meeting Room, 509 North McDonough St. There will be at least two representatives from each of the city’s eight boards and commissions.

Decatur is beginning the 10-year update of its comprehensive plan centering around six broad topics: affordable housing, transportation (including a possible city-wide shuttle service), economic development, land use, natural and cultural resources.

Planning Director Angela Threadgill said the most “pressing topic” is affordable housing, both for seniors on fixed incomes and for the city’s rapidly disappearing middle class.

There are public input meetings scheduled for March 16, April 20 and June 8, each to cover two of the six topics, and a survey will be posted online in mid March. Public comments will be gathered into a draft document that’ll be ready about late June/early July with the commission expected to take action in October.
