Decatur has had a long-time interest in purchasing the entire five acres owned by the Samuel L. Jones Boys & Girls Club, property once part of Oakhurst Park until the city sold it off in the early 1970s. In recent months Weaver Capital Partners has announced intentions of purchasing .6 of an acre from that tract and building two homes on what is now a dog park.

When learning of Weaver’s plans, Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne said the city reminded the club’s metro office it still wants the land. “They’ve never been interested in selling before,” Menne said, “but now we are having conversations with them and they’re not telling us ‘no.’“

Menne added that the proposed Weaver project is entirely separate from the city’s dialogue with the Jones Club.

“We would be interested in the property even if [Weaver buys the .6 acre],” she said, “although obviously we’d prefer all of it.”
