Decatur is hosting an information session for city homeowners on DeKalb County’s property assessment appeal process, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore Street.

Deadline for appealing has passed, but for those who have appealed, learn the next steps in the process and how to plan for future assessments.

Decatur’s tax digest increased by 20 percent this year, which includes 30 percent new construction and 70 percent existing structures. The school board has already approved giving full exemptions from the school tax millage for seniors 65 and over, while the city commission’s contemplating a similar move. Ultimately both homestead exemptions would require approval by the 2016 General Assembly and voter approval in November 2016.
