Decatur closes summer camps; still no decision on pools, rec baseball

Decatur has cancelled all summer camps as more and more recreation possibilities get closed as tightly as this hoop (which has since been removed altogether). However, no decision has yet been made on opening pools (traditionally from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day) or the city’s youth baseball program which runs late May through mid July. The opening day parade, held for the last 20 years and scheduled this year for June 6, is still up in the air. Bill Banks file photo for the AJC

Decatur has canceled all planned summer camps, though no decision’s been made on opening pools or the city’s youth baseball program which runs late May through mid July.

The cancellation includes all camps run by Decatur’s Children and Youth Services (E Camps and the Legacy Park Day Camp) and the sports, tennis and swim camps run by the city’s Active Living Department.

It also includes the Decatur High summer sports seasons and camps including girls and boys basketball, softball, wrestling, gymnastics, cheerleading and football.

Active Living Director Greg White said all enrolled campers and their families will get refunded over the next few weeks.

According to an announcement it’s possible that if the city reaches Phase 2 status (a reduction of COVID-19 cases over 14 days, among other factors) some of the Youth Service’s all-day camps could reopen in July.

Decatur has kept all parks (dog and human) open, but shut down it’s three rec centers on March 12 and has since removed all hoops from its outdoor basketball courts.

City Manager Andrea Arnold said recently that decisions regarding traditional summer festivals and events will be made on a month-to-month basis. All May events like Concert on the Square, the Blue Sky concerts and the venerable Decatur Arts Festival for May 23-24 were cancelled weeks ago.

But no decision’s been made on the next major gatherings, the June 19 Decatur Beach Party and the all-day July 4 activities including fireworks.
