Nearly one year after installing its multi-spaced or “smart” parking meters, Decatur has begun enforcing Saturday parking until 6 p.m. The meters can track, among other things, which spaces get the most use and for how long.

“Our primary focus is [providing] short-term turnover for visitors and retail customers,” said Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne. “We’re finding that too many spaces on Saturday are getting used for long periods.”

Decatur has 35 multi-space pay kiosks and 48 single-head meters covering downtown’s 315 on-street parking spaces. Menne said this is the first time in 20 years the city has enforced Saturday parking. Sunday parking remains free all day.
