A 30-year-old man was killed in a crash that shut down I-20 East in DeKalb County early Saturday morning, police told AJC.com.

According to DeKalb police, Milargo Vasquez’s vehicle was hit from behind when it stopped in the eastbound lanes. The investigation blocked the interstate at Candler Road from about 1 a.m. until just before 4 a.m.

The other vehicle involved was not able to stop, police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer told Channel 2 Action News, and it hit the victim’s vehicle at a “high rate of speed.”

Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation, Spencer said.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
