Dawson County sheriffs said they are investigating a dead body found in an abandoned vehicle, according to a post on their Facebook page.

Sheriffs said they received a call Thursday morning about a car abandoned behind a shopping plaza on Lumpkin Campground Road.

Once at the scene, responding deputies found a body inside the vehicle which is believed to have been there for a couple of days, Dawson County spokesman Capt. Tony Wooten said. Investigators said they have reason to believe the body may be a person reported missing, Wooten added.

Deputies are still early in the investigation and the circumstances surrounding the death remain unknown, Wooten said in a statement.
