It was a surreal scene, born out of a final selfless act.

Jaison Brown, 15, was pronounced dead Friday night at Gwinnett Medical Center, hours after a pre-dawn auto accident that claimed his older brother Jared’s life at the scene.

But because Jaison was an organ donor, he remained hooked to a respirator so his organs could continue functioning in advance of surgery performed Monday. His parents remained by his side through the weekend, with a steady stream of friends and family visiting to say goodbye to the outgoing Dacula High junior.

“This is by far the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to walk a family through,” said the family’s pastor, Kevin Harris. When family members prayed over Jaison’s body one last time, Harris said he broke down.

“I couldn’t be in there,” he said. “It was almost an unimaginable scene.”

A few of the hospital’s doctors joined in on the prayer, Harris said. At one point, a nurse, overwhelmed by tears, leaned on his shoulder.

“I don’t know how this family will ever get through this,” she told him.
