The Cumming City Council Friday voted to hold a special election on June 16 to fill the Post 1 council seat left vacant by longtime council member Rupert Sexton’s retirement effective May 1. The council also unanimously voted to appoint former Forsyth County Clerk of Courts Doug Sorrells to the post on an interim basis.

Sorrells will serve until the winner of the June 16 special election is sworn in, at the council’s July 21 meeting. That person will then serve for the remainder of Sexton’s unexpired term through Dec. 31, 2017.

Sorrels does not plan to run in the special election, said Mayor H. Ford Gravitt.

Sexton, who was first elected in 1970, announced his retirement from the council at the group’s April 21 meeting. He had been the subject of an impeachment investigation involving his allegedly releasing city employee health insurance information on social media.
