It appears even alleged cross-dressing bank robbers like Waffle House.
Two days after his alleged accomplice was taken into custody, a man suspected of being part of a Halloween bank robbery duo continues to elude Marietta police. And there may be a reason John McCrary is on the run: His criminal history includes two previous sentences in state prison.
Thursday morning, McCrary stopped at the Cobb County breakfast eatery on Williams Drive. Patrons recognized him from media reports and called police, Marietta police Officer David Baldwin told the AJC.
But by the time officers arrived, the 33-year-old McCrary was gone, Baldwin said. The man didn't pay for his meal either, a detective told Channel 2 Action News.
"He left in an unknown direction," Baldwin said.
Officers said surveillance footage confirmed that the man was McCrary. This time, he was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans -- not the black wig, sunglasses, skirt and short boots that was his outfit when he allegedly stuck up the BB&T Bank in the 1900 block of Sandy Plains Road.
The cross-dressing may have just been part of the Halloween heist, police said.
Tuesday afternoon, Marietta police arrested Megan Rae Haney, believed to be McCrary's accomplice in the robbery. The 24-year-old woman was being held without bond Thursday in Cobb County jail.
Marietta police say they spotted McCrary on Tuesday morning walking in the vicinity of Barnes Mill Road near North Cobb Parkway. Officers converged on the area. They apprehended Haney, but her alleged male companion got away.
McCrary is described as a bald white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighing 140 to 150 pounds. He should be considered armed and dangerous, police said.
McCrary served seven years in prison in Georgia for previous felony convictions, according to the state Department of Corrections.
He was behind bars for nearly 18 months following a burglary conviction in Cobb County in 1998. From June 2004 until January 2010, McCrary served time for aggravated assault and theft convictions, also in Cobb County.
Less than six months after getting out of Ware State Prison, McCrary was charged with loitering for allegedly being inside a vacant home in the Austell area.
Anyone with information about McCrary's whereabouts is asked to contact Marietta police at 770-499-3911.
