Four men were arrested Sunday after allegedly beating a Covington man to death during a Saturday home invasion, police say.
Officers were called to the home of Fred Layne Beeler shortly before midnight on the report of an assault and home invasion.
They arrived to find Beeler, 59, on his couch with injuries from what appeared to be multiple blows to his head from an unknown object, police said.
He was flown by helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center where he was pronounced dead around 4 a.m., Sunday.
“We don’t know exactly what was taken, but we believe robbery was a motive,” Covington police Capt. Ken Malcom told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
At different times of the day Sunday, police, with the aid of the GBI, arrested Shane Deforest Winter, 21, Shavarious Jawan Moses, 17, and Preston Ranard Mason, 21, all of Jonesboro, and Justin Lee Bennett, 19, of Conyers.
The four men were each charged with murder, armed robbery and burglary, and are being held in the Newton County jail without bond.
