County seeks youth commissioners

Fulton County is seeking youth commissioners to help develop policies and legislation to address the concerns of young people. A student must be a Fulton resident, attend a school within the county, be in 9th through 11th grade during the 2013-14 school year and submit a completed application and two-page essay. Deadline is 5 p.m. May 17.

Cultural Celebration to be April 27

The Clayton County Cultural Celebration will be 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center, 2530 Mt. Zion Parkway, Jonesboro. The event features the Hawaiian Children’s Dance Lei Hua; Eve Hao Chinese Dance, Lyrika Holmes NYC, Drum Dance, Cordao de Ouro, Kagam Style Dance, Terrell Walker True Warriors and others.

Brookhaven appoints Development Authority

Brookhaven City Council recently appointed seven residents to serve on the city’s first Development Authority.

Members will serve four-year, staggered terms. They are Walk Ehmer, president of Waffle House, as chairman and members Luke Anderson, Susan Coker, Pat Hoban, Tim Peaden, John Rhett and Bruce Whitmer.

Henry

Elementary to start new program

Starting next school year, Henry County’s Dutchtown Elementary School will have a Chinese dual immersion program. The school will have 40 students learning Mandarin Chinese starting in kindergarten. Mandarin Chinese is the largest spoken language in the world, and it is one of four languages identified by the state as vital to regional and state economic futures.

The school was given a $15,000 start-up grant to assist with materials, training and development for the school's staff members. Nancy Badertscher

Golf benefit planned for Bullock Hope House

The annual Golf Fore Hope Tournament will begin at 7 a.m. April 29 at Creekside Golf and Country Club, 591 Westchester Club Drive, Hiram.

Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Bullock Hope House in Powder Springs, providing free private housing to cancer patients and their families.
