Catholic high school breaks ground Monday

A Catholic high school for economically disadvantaged students plans to break ground Monday with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and Atlanta Archbishop Wilton Gregory.

Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School is scheduled to open in fall 2014 as one of 25 Cristo Rey schools around the country.

The Midtown Atlanta school intends to provide students with college preparatory education and corporate work study experience. Mark Niesse

Fathers to walk students to school

Gwinnett County’s Norton Elementary will participate in a “Million Father March” event on Tuesday. Fathers, step fathers, grandfathers, uncles, neighbors, and friends are invited to bring their student to school between 7:45 a.m. and 8:15 a.m.

Participants will receive a sticker that reads: “I brought my child to school today.” The idea is good dads produce better students, better schools and better communities, organizers said. Nancy Badertscher

KSU to hold leader lecture series

The Michael J. Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University will kick off its annual Tetley Distinguished Leader Lecture Series at 2 p.m. Sept. 11 in Prillaman Hall, 1000 Chastain Rd N.W with John Dewberry, chairman and CEO of Dewberry Capital.

Construction underway on Candler Road

Crews have begun a $7.2 million overhaul of Candler Road which includes new utility lines, sidewalks, repaving and landscaping on the nearly four-mile segment between I-285 and Memorial Drive.

The state Department of Transportation is paying $1.7 million of the cost on the road, which is a state highway. April Hunt

Registration open for basketball leagues

DeKalb County parks is accepting registration through November for a winter adult basketball league at all county recreation centers.

Cost is $320 per team an eight-game season that begins in December. Participants must be 35 or older and provide their own uniforms for the league.
