Pre-K educators can earn bonuses
Georgia will offer early childhood educators bonuses of up to $2,500 if they get additional training under a program state officials announced Tuesday.
Early childhood education program administrators and teaching personnel can receive financial awards for accomplishments including completing associate degrees or other educational credentials.

Veterans’ memorial movie opens today
“Freedom is Never Free: The Story of the Snellville Veterans Memorial,” a short film about the monument’s construction, veterans who helped build it and the memories of 40 veterans will be shown each hour from 4 to 8 p.m. today in Council Chambers at City Hall, 2432 Oak Road. The event coincides with the Snellville Tourism and Trade’s Star-Spangled Snellville Fourth of July Celebration 3 p.m. on the Towne Green. Information: www.snellville.org.

Civil Air Patrol cadets in Dunwoody parade
Cadets with the DeKalb Civil Air Patrol squadron at Peachtree DeKalb Airport will participate in this year’s Fourth of July Parade in Dunwoody.
The Civil Air Patrol is the civilian auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force.
The organization is open boys and girls 12 to 18 who want to learn about aviation, aerospace, leadership, search and rescue and character development.
Members participate in educational flights in powered aircraft and gliders.
The DeKalb Civil Air Patrol squadron meets at 6:45 p.m. every Thursday at Peachtree DeKalb Airport, 2000 Airport Road, Suite 227, Chamblee.

Morehouse med school has new president
Valerie Montgomery Rice took over Morehouse School of Medicine this week, becoming the first women to lead the medical school as president and dean.
Montgomery Rice, who began her new position July 1, is replacing retiring president John Maupin Jr., who had led the institution since 2006.
Montgomery Rice is an obstetrician and gynecologist, and was named executive vice president and dean of Morehouse School of Medicine in 2011. Prior to joining Morehouse, she served in various administrative and leadership positions at Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tenn., and Kansas School of Medicine.
An inauguration ceremony for Montgomery Rice is scheduled for Sept. 11. Janel Davis

Free summer diabetes classes in Austell
In partnership with Cobb2020 and the YMCA of Metro Atlanta, “Better Choices, Better Health - Diabetes” will be offered free this summer as part of a research study by Stanford University and funded by the National Council on Aging.
Anyone 18 years or older with type 2 diabetes may register.
Orientation will be at 6:30 p.m. July 8 at the South Cobb Recreation Center, 875 Six Flags Drive, Austell with sessions from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, July 15 through Aug. 19.
