Henry County officials announced July 19 the closing of Cochran Park in Stockbridge because of what they called “a dangerous and hazardous situation for the public.”

Among the problems identified were a crumbling stormwater pipe system resulting in several sinkholes and a compromised parking lot. Plans are being made to move the youth baseball teams based at Cochran Park to other fields for the fall season. County Commissioner Bruce Holmes said he wants to take out the fields and fencing and repurpose it as a passive park while moving the lights and scoreboards for use at other county parks.

A barricade has already been erected to close off the main parking area, leaving open the first part of the parking area and the playground equipment. Temporary signage has also been posted warning people not to park on the closed lot.
