The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners and the Resource Recovery Development Authority are moving to put the idled Ball Ground Recycling Center property to use.

The agencies agreed during a joint meeting to accept a letter of interest from Cowart Mulch, which is offering to lease/purchase the more than 30-acre tract for 30 years for $3 million.

Cowart filed a lawsuit against county officials last year as a complicated legal wrangle erupted surrounding the two agencies and the firm failing to reach a deal. Commission chair L.B. “Buzz” Ahrens said that once a contract is finalized, the lawsuit will be dropped.

Ahrens said lawyers are working on fine print, with a goal of having a finalized agreement in place by May 1. The shuttered plant has been costing the county an estimated $100,000 a month in loan debt service payments since the center’s former operator went under.
