Police were at the scene of a southeast Atlanta apartment, where a gunman had barricaded himself inside Monday afternoon.

Zone 3 officers responded to a call at the Forest Cove apartments, in the 600 block of Newtown Circle, said spokespeople for the Atlanta Police Department. The standoff is a few blocks away from a federal penitentiary.

A neighbor told Channel 2 Action News he saw as many as 10 to 20 officers surround the apartment. Residents were being kept out of the building.

Investigators did not say whether anyone was being held hostage or if any shots had been fired from the apartment.

A SWAT negotiator also was called to the scene.
