A man who arrived at Grady Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound last week told police he wasn’t a car thief but just needed the wheels to go “somewhere.”

The warrant detailing the allegations against Demarcus Giles, 23, of Lithonia doesn’t elaborate on where somewhere was. But the document quotes the victim saying Giles got in the 2011 Hyundai Sonata on Flat Shoals Road outside Decatur Monday and started to drive away.

The victim had been putting air in his tires at about 8:30 p.m. He said he attempted to pull the suspect out, prompting the suspect to reach for a gun and threaten to shoot.

The victim pulled his own gun and shot Giles, who still managed to drive away, the warrant said.

The car was recovered.

Giles was booked in the county jail Wednesday and remained held without bond on Monday, records showed. He’s charged with hijacking.

Further information wasn’t released.
