A fight at an off-campus pool party is being blamed for the death of an Atlanta man who attended Jackson State University in Mississippi.

Nolan Ryan Henderson, 19, was fatally shot early Sunday morning, according to a report in the Clarion-Ledger.

The newspaper said Henderson was shot in the face and found on the ground in front of an apartment building near 1400 Valley St. around 1 a.m.

The freshman was pronounced dead at the scene. No suspect information has been released, police told the newspaper.

The Clarion-Ledger quoted Henderson's grandmother, Alma Henderson, as saying the family was told that Henderson bumped into someone at the party and apologized, but a fight broke out and Henderson was shot. The apartment complex management, however, taped a notice on apartment doors calling the shooting "accidental."

Alma Henderson said her grandson was not a troublemaker. "He was quiet, studious," she said.

Police are interviewing witnesses, but there was not report of an arrest, the newspaper said.
