Concept planning for a new road to connect Bluffs Parkway with the Cherokee County Airport has been approved by the county’s Board of Commissioners.

The County Board approved a $48,400 professional services agreement with VHB, an Atlanta engineering firm, to begin planning the Heard Road Extension to the airport. The airfield is on the west side of I-575 north of Canton, and county planning documents identify the airport area as having potential for future business development.

VHB is charged with identifying a potential corridor for the extension and determining its feasibility, taking into consideration physical constraints, environmental issues, utilities, impacted properties, right-of-way needs and other issues, according to a staff report for the County Board.

VHB also will determine the project schedule and cost estimates. With the consultant’s report in hand, the county can set a project budget and make a detailed request for proposals for a complete engineering design, staff said.
