Crews have begun a streetscape project on a key roadway in central DeKalb County.

The $7.2 million overhaul of Candler Road will include new utility lines, sidewalks, repaving and landscaping on the nearly four-mile segment between I-285 and Memorial Drive.

The state Department of Transportation is paying $1.7 million of the cost on the road, which is a state highway. Federal grants and local sales tax money is paying for most of the rest.
