The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted Dec. 2 to name the new county park planned for the Kelleytown area in memory of Bud Kelley, who served as a county commissioner from 1969-1976.

The motion was made by Commissioner Reid Bowman, in whose district the new park is located. He noted Kelley’s reputation as a public servant and the fact that much of his family still lives in the area as reasons for the decision.

Bowman also pointed out that three other parks in the county – Richard Craig Park in McDonough, Warren Holder Park in Locust Grove, and J.P. Moseley Park in Stockbridge – are named for Henry County residents.

The vote was unanimous. Chairman Tommy Smith said the board would present a proclamation honoring Kelley and the family at the next meeting, which is scheduled for Dec. 16.

The park is still in development, and a design/build contract was approved at the same meeting.
